What is the best toothpaste ?

What is the composition of toothpaste?

Do all toothpastes contain fluoride ?

Toothpaste is used with a toothbrush to mechanically clean the teeth from food residues and deposits on the teeth, and it can also contain special materials that can contribute to increasing the resistance of the teeth.

Toothpastes can be divided into the following types:

  • Toothpaste for the prevention of caries: which usually contains fluoride
  • Whitening toothpaste: which contains abrasive materials.
  • Therapeutic periodontal toothpaste: which contains oral antiseptics, antibacterials and antifungals, especially for the treatment of periodontal infections.
  • Toothpaste for sensitive teeth: It contains compounds that seal exposed dentin with the aim of reducing dental sensitivity such as calcium, potassium and strontium compounds.

In general, it can be said that toothpaste consists of the following compounds:

  • A humectant: such as sorbitol or glycerin.
  • Detergent: such as sodium laonyl sulfate.
  • Abrasive material: such as sodium bicarbonate.
  • Binding material: such as carboxymethylcellulose.

We can find different concentrations of fluoride within the paste according to the purpose of its use:

  • In the case of the need for natural daily care, the concentration of fluorine can reach one thousand international units (1000 ppm).
  • In the event of severe necrosis, the concentration of fluorine in the paste can reach five thousand international units (5000 ppm).

Accordingly, there is no absolute best toothpaste, but each case has its own indications that dictate a specific type of toothpaste to be used.
